buckman

today i was at costco {i go like once a week, or more. just depends when i'm out of my big bag of spinach. which, this time, was friday-tuesday. that's a lot of spinach consumption.} . and i saw this stack of milkbone boxes. and then i remembered my sweet buckman. and my mom would buy those for him. and we would take him outside at night and he would wait for his milkbone. but bucky was self-conscious to eat in front of anyone. so he would take his bone in his mouth, and then watch you until you went inside. sometimes, for fun, we would open and close the door and stand behind the cabinet that blocked us from his view, and then peek around the corner. "ha ha! caught you eating buckman!" we were so lame, i know.
and then i just kept thinking about this sweet puppy of ours. his bday was on sunday. he seriously was a member of the family. i thought i was a dog lover, but i'm actually just a golden retriever lover. and maybe some labs. other than that, not really. except g.ma's dog betsy. and my aunt gina had golden retrievers, too. oh rufus, he was also so precious. anyway, back to buckman. he's been gone a year and a half.  i've been in utah for 4 years, and i still forget that bucky won't be there every time i go home. loved that dog. and i won't even start on our other golden, cashmere, that my parents got before we were born. oh, no cashmere would let my bunny lay right next to it for hours.
also, remember how every year we would give bucky his summer shave? and he felt SO naked.  i'm telling you, this dog was so self-conscious. and he was on the heavier end. not fat, but not your typical "athletic" looking golden {because we weren't faithful walkers. oh, and bucky would usually hault mid-walk and refuse to go. thinks he's some sort of human}. so one year he got this summer shave. and it was a wee bit shorter than usually. and he seriously would not get off his little bean bag chair {yes, this dog had our old bean bag chair as his pillow/bed}. and then finally, he got off of that chair of his. and he like slid against the wall to walk to the door to go out. it's like he was too embarrassed to showcase his whole body, so he shimmied against the wall to only reveal half of his bod.
but then after that, he like turned into a man. and he was brave. and not afraid of men anymore {he was afraid of men before}. also, remember how it was really important for erin's boyfriend, now husband, to win buckman over? he bought him a pupcake. and then he would snuggle with buck. oh mike, i'm glad you got his heart before he broke all of ours and went to puppy heaven.

oh buckman. world's best dog. seriously.
and thank you
for allowing me
to reminisce
about buckman.
if you never knew him,
you will meet him
in Heaven.
he will be there.
with the cool collars.
i always bought him
cool collars.
just like we bought
cool ties for my dad.
yes i just related my
dad's ties to my pup's collars.
human, i'm telling you. hu-man.
